After installing and rebooting, the cloud icon is not appearing in the indicator area until U1 is open and closed.

Thank you for your bug report, setting to rls-q-notfixing, it's not likely to be fixed at this point of the release and not a blocker anything since that package is in universe

Is that still an issue? I can't confirm here...

This is by design. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SyncMenu#Presence says "The sync menu should not be present by default; it should be present only when any service is currently registered to be in it."

I suspect the problem psivaa's seeing here is that U1 isn't registering for the Sync Menu until he manually launches U1.

It is worth noting that there is a 30 second delay until start-up of ubuntuone-syncdaemon, after log-in. This is to prevent it from slowing down login when it rescans the local folders to see if anything needs to be synchronized, when it starts up. It is likely that by coincidence, you are opening the Ubuntu One control panel app, at roughly the same time as ubuntuone-syncdaemon starts up and registers with the sync menu.
