Bug Description
If you use the sound indicator with a vertical panel, it will disappear when an app like Rhythmbox that adds itself to the indicator's menu is opened (or closed).
You can see this by adjusting the properties of the default Ubuntu MATE top panel by changing the orientation to left. The sound indicator is there, but if you open Rhythmbox it disappears. If you change the panel back to top orientation, the indicator shows up again. (If you then change it back to left, the sound indicator does show up, but will disappear again if you quit Rhythmbox.

I also had the battery indicator similarly disappear after I played with the options to show percentage and time with the icon.
