Bug Description

I noticed after performing updates 2-3 weeks ago that my messages indicator no longer turns blue to notify me that I have chat messages waiting. It also does not show unread chat messages in the list like it used to. I have confirmed that Xchat and Gwibber/Friends messages do not appear to trigger a new waiting message indicator either.

I have tried reinstalling indicator-messages, and I have confirmed empathy.desktop exists in dconf com.canonical.indicator.messages:applications. None of these have fixed the issue.

I suspect a required package was removed or a new setting was not applied, but I don't know what it could be.

Do we have any indication that there will be work done on this before release? This bug effects not only empathy and friends/gwibber notifications, but xchat and presumably Thunderbird as well! It makes using a chat application impossible when you have more than a screen full of contacts (ie: company setting).

affects: indicator-messages (Ubuntu) → empathy

The attached python script (contributed by <trism> in #ubuntu+1 channel), when coupled with a .desktop file and configured in dconf indicator/messages does trigger an attention icon. When you remove attention from the application, the icon returns to its normal status.

Hey, thanks for reporting this bug. I've recently merged a patch that should fix this issue (lp:~larsu/indicator-messages/lp1229422). It was released this morning as indicator-messages-13.10.1+13.10.20131004-0ubuntu1. Can you please check whether it does after the update comes in?

I can see this on a maguro running mir under image 80 as well, so I'll try the fix when it's out.
