Bug Description

Binary package hint: indicator-applet

When using Pidgin for IM, it is impossible to change status to anything else from Offline via messaging menu.

How to reproduce:
1. Install Pidgin, remove Empathy (not sure the latter is needed). Pidgin must be set up so it can go online.
2. Set Pidgin to offline (either via its own, or via messaging menu).
3. Open messaging menu, try to change the status to online.

Expected result
The messaging menu items are enabled. "Online" sets Pidgin status to online.

Actual result
The messaging menu items are disabled. "Online" does nothing.

The problem doesn't occurs only with Pidgin, but also with Empathy.

I'm also seeing this with a fresh upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04, using Empathy, not Pidgin. So I'd say it's a bug in the indicator applet regardless of IM client, and one in the core functionality of what the applet's supposed to do.

Confirming the problem. Once the status is set offline, the indicator applet disables all menu items that allow changing user status.

confirming this bug. In addition, it is impossible for me to change my status from online to away via the indicator applet. When I do so, pidgin disconnects my ICQ-Account and my MSN-Account (seems random to me) because I "have logged on from another place". Which is apparently not correct.

Why is importance low? It makes the whole thing utterly useless

I confirm the same problem exists with Maverick. It is not possible to change the status to away in Pidgin using the Me Menu, as mentioned above, the msn goes offline when doing that.

Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.
