Bug Description

When clicking on the date/time, the dropdown window contains the year/month/day I visited there previously. Since altering the month or year doesn't change the day, often today's day number is highlighted. This, along with today's date being shown at the top, very easily leads to the misbelief that the current month's calendar is being shown, which is not necessarily the case. It's terribly misleading.

(In the mean time, I understand that keeping the year/month during closure and reopening of the dropdown might be considered a feature useful for many people.)

Furthermore, there's no option to jump to today, I have to manually walk to the current year and month.

My suggestion is a "Today" button, with clearly distinguisable disabled state if it's already today's month being shown.

Especially annoying since if a user opens it to see the date, then does so on the next day... it will show the same date as before (i.e. the date of the previous day). I can only get it to reset by logging out or restarting.

I think it is important that the indicator resets the selected date when it gets closed.
It's not very feasible.

I guess this can cause real-world problems: I just scheduled a meeting for an incorrect date since I was viewing the wrong month. Though in fairness it was partially my fault since I knew about this bug. Any chance it’ll be fixed in Trusty? Thanks!

It keeps confusing me all the time, too, even though I'm also aware of the issue. (Unfortunately here and in other bugreports too it seems to me that Ubuntu gives really low priority to basic usability issues :( )

My calendar now says Friday, 7 February 2014, but the orange highlight is on February 27th. This is so annoying that I cannot find words to describe it.

And if I remember correctly, this has been broken for years now. Is it really impossible to update the view to show current date when the user opens the calendar?

The issue where the calendar wouldn't open on the current day has been fixed in that update:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/indicator-datetime/13.10.0+14.04.20140131-0ubuntu1

I'm keeping the bug open for the "can't jump to the current date" request though
