This bug was fixed in the package indicator-appmenu - 0.1.93-0ubuntu1

---------------
indicator-appmenu (0.1.93-0ubuntu1) natty; urgency=low

  * New upstream release.
    * Remove the signals on menu items we're no longer caring
      about (LP: #706941)
    * Close open menus when switching windows (LP: #709305)
    * Find the correct entry to remove when removing entries
    * Watch window closing at the indicator level instead of
      the window level to make it less racy

While the above fix keeps unity from crashing, the underlying issue with evolution is still present. I can use the reproducer in this bug to freeze evolution and hang the desktop now (ie, I can't click or do anything until evolution is killed). Evolution turns gray, but doesn't die. The CPU is not pegged and nothing is added to .xsession-errors when it happens.

I did notice:
* sometimes a single left click on a search result contact will preview it, sometimes hang
* double clicking the search result contact will cause a hang
* right clicking on a search result contact will cause a hang
