Ok, I spent some more time on this today :-(

I modified menu-test.c from comment #55. I added the application indicator stuff (I tried to copy the way this is done in gnome-power-manager). It seems to leak pretty heavily. Maybe some developers will be able to reproduce this on their machines now.
