Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

In previous versions there was a tooltip popup. I know you can click the battery icon and get the information, but if you just quickly want the information, that adds an extra step.

I can confirm this behavior in Lucid Alpha-3 updated as of this morning. It would be nice to be able to quickly see battery % without having to click :)

Changed in gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu):

After speaking with seb128 on irc, this is the intent of the new design. I do still believe that this is a bug, and has regression potential due to the fact of now having to click on the icon to see the time remaining and having to click elsewhere to go back to what you were working on. I realize that this is fairly minor, but it adds two extra steps, which aren't needed and shouldn't be there.

Thanks, but this is not a gnome-power-manager bug. Tooltips are not supported by application indicators, so reassigning there. That's actually a design decision though

affects: gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu) → indicator-application (Ubuntu)

It is indeed a regression; and it isn't just on-battery. If there is external power available and the battery is charging, there is no longer easy mouseover information about how long it will take to complete charging. This information does not appear to be available, regardless of the numbers of clicks or diversionary context changes undertaken.

The battery status info should be available easily without having to open a new window in my opinion too. As a suggestion: what's your opinion about having an item in the power-manager's indicator menu showing a percentage bar of the battery, and the status (charging, discharging, charged) as an icon. Something like the volume indicator applet, but with a percentage bar instead of the slider, and with other icons, and below that a battery status Menu like the Sound preferences item in the volume indicator applet... the consistency would improve a bit, and no new window showing lots of unnecessary things would open, only the indicator.

I think Roth Róbert's solution would be great, even having to click to see that information, at least you get the info you need in a very simple and useful way.

That is important. If the inspiration is from OS X style "menu icons", then you might as well copy the useful part: all of the "status"-type icons (Wifi, battery) in OS X also display a entry that gives the current status when you open their menu [this includes signal strength, battery status/charging time, etc]. These are inactive items to prevent them from being clicked.

This doesn't fix the "no-click" regression mentioned, but at least you should be able to get the status from the indicator icon menu without opening a brand new window or applet.

I have been using lucid-beta2 for the past week or so and find the missing tooltip an annoyance.

This is particularly accentuated by the fact that nearly every other icon in that area has informative tooltips integrated, eg. sound, network, date. Further, nearly every app that has an icon in that area boasts of meaningful tooltips.

Hello. I don't think that my comment appropriate for bug #527458 ,
so I would like to say it here - I'm also think that there should be useful
and convenient way for user to get power/battery state/information
without any additional efforts, so a couple months ago I've started small project,
and now, to whom it may concern, I would like to make announce for first version
of public release here. See pages:
