Currently indicator-application does not support formated menu items (bold).

Formated menu items are used in some of the status icons for example in gnome-settings-daemon and gnome-bluetooth.

Thank you for helping with making Ubuntu better by reporting this bug. I've opened an upstream task and therefore this bug is now Triaged. The status is set to Wishlist because this is a proposal for the addition of a feature that isn't critical to the functioning of the Application Indicators.

gnome-bluetooth refuses to appear on my panel, but after reading that message and looking at the screenshots on <http://live.gnome.org/GnomeBluetooth>, I don't understand why it would need bold for connected devices. That's what checkmark items are for.

Having said that, it seems reasonable to me to allow basic formatting of menu item text -- bold, italics, etc. We should be really rigorous about this, though, to avoid the headaches we have with markup in Notify OSD. Either label text is *not* markup, in which case I should be able to specify an menu item with the text "Bold <b>" and have it appear as "Bold <b>"; or label text *is* markup, in which case I should be able to specify a menu item with the text "Bold &lt;b&#62;" and have it appear as "Bold <b>".

There seems to be an additional inconsistency: If a menu item is specified as "<b> Foo </b>", the markup is stripped and the menu item displayed as 'Foo'. However, if a menu item is specified as "<span foreground=\"blue\"> Foo </span>" then the markup is *not* stripped, and the <span> tag is displayed as part of the label's text. This is clearly undesirable and should be fixed.
