Bug Description

Binary package hint: indicator-applet

The spacing surrounding icons within the notification area are fixed and unalterable.
This is pretty poor for those who find it visually abhorrent to waste as much space as it does
http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/955/whyspacewhy.jpg for screenshot.
Left 3 icons are spaced as desired, since they can be individually moved.
Right 3 icons are within the notification area and unchangable

are you complaining that the space is unalterable, or that it is too wide? if the latter, there's a possible dupe in lp#589666 (and i agree)
