Ignore my last comment please. Please try to remove indicator-applet-session from the panel and add it again and see if that solves the problem.

Removing the applet from the panel, and then adding again did not solve the problem.

When trying:-
sudo apt-get remove indicator-session
The response was that the package did not exist, so then trying:-
sudo apt-get install indicator-session
and then adding indicator applet session to the panel has resolved the issue.
This would imply that the applet was removed during the last upgrade.

This has been a fix on my system.

ran
sudo apt-get remove Indicator-applet-session

and it defaulted remove two packages Indicator-applet-session and ubuntu-desktop

ran
sudo apt-get install Indicator-applet-session

and it interestingly it doesn't add ubuntu-desktop backin in so i canceled and ran
sudo apt-get install Indicator-applet-session ubuntu-desktop

and reboot, Works fine
Not quite sure why it removes ubuntu-desktop, i haven't mastered dependencies yet, (But that doesn't seem right)

It looks like this may be a dependency problem in ubuntu-desktop.

Looking at the changelog for indicator-applet, it looks like the dependencies for this changed back on 15 Feb:
indicator-applet (0.3.2-0ubuntu3) lucid; urgency=low

  * debian/control:
    - Switching indicator-session and indicator-me to recommends
      of indicator-applet-session.
    - Switching indicator-applet-complete to recommend everything.
    - Adding indicator-application to indicator-applet recommends

So, I think perhaps indicator-applet-complete needs to be added to ubuntu-desktop, since the dependency from indicator-applet-session no longer exists.

Got solved by: apt-get install indicator-session, logout and login again
(it wasn't installed).

It looks like multiple people have reported this and have posted a suitable workaround.
I'm guessing marking it as confirmed was simply overlooked.

I just upgraded two machines to the new lucid release, and in each of them, indicator-session was not installed by default and had to be manually installed. ubuntu-desktop was also not kept installed during the upgrade. Does anyone know what might cause this?

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 server and wanted a minimum ubuntu desktop environment so I ran the following command: sudo aptitude install --without-recommends ubuntu-desktop. When I did this, everything worked correctly but I did not have any indicators. Thankfully I found this bug and was able to remedy the problem by running the command: sudo aptitude install indicator-session and then logging out and logging back in.

Sorry... I forgot to add that I also had previously done a full ubuntu-desktop install on top of the 10.04 server install and the applicator had worked fine.

stacy, in your case certainly there are some things missing that need to be
installed
