What version of Ubuntu are you running? If you are on Lucid, the volume applet has merged for the time being with the new message menu under the name "Indicator Applet." So you can just right click and add the Indicator Applet to the panel to get the volume applet back.

Just so you know, there are also plenty of ways to adjust the volume without using the volume applet, for example System -> Preferences -> Sound, and alsamixer to name two.

Changed in ubuntu:
status: New → Incomplete

Can it be changed back? It also puts the mail icon there and I do not
want the mail icon.
Also the window sizing and closing icons are on the wrong side of the window.

But, so far so good, I am telling everyone about this version and how
good it is.

Thanks... for everything

Paul

I gather from your comments you are on Lucid. Well the window management buttons is a whole separate issue. There is a lot of debate about that (see bug #532633) but it's a whole separate issue from this.

There is probably a gconf key to hide the messaging menu, but I can't find it right now.

summary: - Volume Applet Gone from panel

Well the eventual scope of indicators is 'application indicators' and 'system indicators' so I guess this situation might change in Lucid+1

One thing to note is that you can get rid of the mail icon in the indicator applet by uninstalling the indicator-messages package. (SImilarly, you can get rid of the user status menu by uninstalling the indicator-me package). It's not a great solution for multi-user systems, but it suits me fine.
