Bug Description

Binary package hint: indicator-applet

Every time I start my computer, indicator-applet and indicator-session don't work, crashing with the following errors:

OAFIID:GNOME_FastUserSwitchApplet
OAFIID:GNOME_IndicatorSession
(something like that)

The problem only occurs during boot or restart. If I logout and start Gnome again, it works. If I wait the errors and use "killall gnome-panel", the panel is reloaded with all the applets working.

Removing the applets stops the errors. Adding it again, the problems are back again. I've have tryed to stop X and gconf and remove all the Gnome config files and directories, without success. I've tryed to edit /etc/xdg/autostart/indicator-applet.desktop and change the startup phase, no success again.

Thanks by the answer. I've followed the steps, installed gdb and the debug packages and retrieved a backtrace (attached). However, I think that it doesn't have any information, because I cannot reproduce the problem, except during the system startup. There is a way to backtrace indicator-applet since startup?

Leonardo Torok (leotorok) wrote :

I forgot the file... Here it is. I've done the backtrace of indicator-applet-session too because the exit of "ps aux | grep -i indicator" shows that this program has one of the OAFIIDs of the error. The other OAFIID is indicator-applet.

You could let apport catch the crash. what ubuntu version do you use?

Leonardo Torok (leotorok) wrote :

I use Ubuntu 9.10 (x86). The problem is that apport doesn't catches the crash. It works with any other programa crash, but not with that one.

I'm able to reproduce this issue with the 2010-03-21 Lucid Ubuntu LiveCD i386 image.

The symptom is that on starting the Gnome desktop shows with a couple of icons but there are no panels and therefore no menus or notificaition area, taskbar, etc. From tty1 doing "sudo service gdm restart" works correctly and the panels and menus, applet icons all show up.

The live session .xsession-errors shows:

** (gnome-panel:2384): WARNING **: panel-applet-frame.c:1310: failed to get Bonobo/Control interface on applet OAFIID:GNOME_IndicatorApplet:
Unknown CORBA exception id: 'IDL:omg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0'

** (gnome-panel:2384): WARNING **: panel-applet-frame.c:1310: failed to get Bonobo/Control interface on applet OAFIID:GNOME_FastUserSwitchApplet:
Unknown CORBA exception id: 'IDL:omg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0'

** (gnome-panel:2384): WARNING **: panel-applet-frame.c:1310: failed to get Bonobo/Control interface on applet OAFIID:GNOME_NotificationAreaApplet:
Unknown CORBA exception id: 'IDL:omg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0'

checking for processes that reference CORBA IDs shows:

ps -ef | grep OAF
ubuntu 2534 1 0 18:59 ? 00:00:00 /usr/lib/gnome-panel/wnck-applet --oaf-activate-iid=OAFIID:GNOME_Wncklet_Factory --oaf-ior-fd=18

ubuntu 2561 1 0 18:59 ? 00:00:01 /usr/lib/gnome-panel/clock-applet --oaf-activate-iid=OAFIID:GNOME_ClockApplet_Factory --oaf-ior-fd=28

I have this error appeared after upgrading to Ubuntu 10.04 beta
