Kubuntu Karmic fully updated
Everun Note with Turion X2 TL-56 and RS690M graphics (open source radeon driver as installed by default)

When logging in with kdm I only get the desktop background colour and the mouse pointer. No menu, no toolbar and no shortcuts working to try to launch any application. I had to type '"restart kdm" and use another windowmanager.

I've tried to start icewm with startx (as I did successfully with fluxbox) but without any success. Package seems to be broken.

I've tried AMD64 platform too and I can't start icewm using
startx /usr/in/icewm
startx /usr/bin/icewm-experimental
Login with kdm doesn't work either.

Have you tried building lucid's source package in a karmic pbuilder/sbuild/schroot? (See http://packages.qa.debian.org/i/icewm.html for the changes files.)

Doesn't icewm-session start the task bar? The bar should show up anyway, but icewm-session might be a work-around. Another work-around might be adding the lines,
ShowTaskBar = 1
TaskBarAutoHide = 0
TaskBarShowStartMenu = 1
to ~/.icewm/preferences or ~/.icewm/prefoverrides
These are all default, but setting them might work.
I've had no trouble with the taskbar (same icewm on Lucid, current on Lucid, ? on Jaunty), it might not be the package.
