This problem affects me as well, no open solution for Java web applets. No open solution for using the "Gallery2 web upload" applet feature for my sites. Also on amd64 main repositories.

Together with bug #255681 This means that neither of the options given by the Firefox plugin finder on amd64 work. A work around (installing cacao-oj6-plugin) is discussed in bug #255681 however.

I have this same issue using Ubuntu 9.10 (32bit). I have the same broken dependency issue when trying to install the icedtea plugin or any openjdk component.
