Bug Description

I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 dev (amd64) and want to install ia32-libs 20090808ubuntu28. ia32-libs which is only available for amd64 depends on ia32-libs-multiarch which is only available for i386. I have activated multiarch support to solve this problem (I created a file with "foreign-architecture i386" at /etc/dpkg/dpkg.cfg.d/multiarch). But no one of the dependencies of ia32-libs-multiarch can be installed. For example lsb-base:i386 is a subdependency but not available. Or some other subdependecies want to remove some of my amd64 packages.

As indicated in the changelog, this is deliberate. ia32-libs will be installable again when all of the libraries it previously shipped have been converted for multiarch.

It's installable but removes all sorts of apps, including ubuntu-desktop. It also installs a host of 386 packages.

I guess it's not ready just yet.

What's the scoop with this?

I'm having this problem today, with an up to date 12.04/KDE.

This bug is already fixed. If there are new dependency problems it is a new bug.

How is this bug fixed? I'm not able to install ia32libs or wine. My system is up to date.

Has a new bug been submitted? If so, what is the ticket number?

Mine was due to a PPA package for KDE stuffs that had a version of a library and that PPA being disable/unavailable after upgrading. librtm (or some such thing).

Mine was from a dnjl ppa.

So I removed the offending version from the PPA and installed the official one and was able to install ia32libs again.

I'm also seeing this problem. I can't install ia32-libs on Ubuntu Precise. My system is up-to-date, I just can't install ia32-libs.

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 ia32-libs : Depends: ia32-libs-multiarch
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

Any ideas?

The trouble on my system was that libgd2-xpm:i386 had to be installed before ia32-libs could be installed. It conflicted with libgd2-noxpm.

apt-get's resolver does not work correctly? I understand that dist-upgrade should be used for these situations, but it doesn't allow installation of new packages. apt-get install doesn't work under these conditions.

I'd love to use aptitude, which would resolve these issues probably, BUT it still isn't multi-arch aware enough...

Try to use "dpkg --add-architecture i386" and install ia32-libs again.
