Also, FYI, your comment further down, “I suggest to include it into both 64-bit and 32-bit "pulseaudio" package, for 64-bit systems the second line is not needed.” may not be entirely accurate. Skype only comes in a 32 bit version right now and for the foreseeable future, therefore, we are forced to use 32 bit drivers for files that Skyler is dependent on. We have no choice but to force the install of the 32 bit version of Skype. Skype and OpenOffice are both must have apps for me at this time. sudo dpk -i --force-all ./skype_1.2.0.18-1_i386.deb than I installed “getlibs” and used it to install the many dependent libraries that are need to run skype. getlibs /usr/bin/skype which installs: Get:1 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/main lib32z1 1:1.2.3.3.dfsg-12ubuntu1 [75.6kB] Get:2 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/main lib32stdc++6 4.3.2-1ubuntu11 [333kB] Get:3 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/main lib32asound2 1.0.17a-0ubuntu4 [320kB] Get:4 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/main lib32ncurses5 5.6+20071124-1ubuntu2 [179kB] Get:5 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/universe ia32-libs 2.2ubuntu18 [23.2MB] Get:6 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/universe lib32nss-mdns 0.10-3ubuntu2 [17.4kB] ldd /usr/bin/skype linux-gate.so.1 => (0xf7ee4000) libasound.so.2 => /usr/lib32/libasound.so.2 (0xf7dfd000) libXv.so.1 => /usr/lib32/libXv.so.1 (0xf7df7000) libXss.so.1 => /usr/lib32/libXss.so.1 (0xf7df2000) librt.so.1 => /lib32/librt.so.1 (0xf7de9000) libQtDBus.so.4 => /usr/lib32/libQtDBus.so.4 (0xf7d7b000) libQtGui.so.4 => /usr/lib32/libQtGui.so.4 (0xf7478000) libQtNetwork.so.4 => /usr/lib32/libQtNetwork.so.4 (0xf7377000) libQtCore.so.4 => /usr/lib32/libQtCore.so.4 (0xf7149000) libpthread.so.0 => /lib32/libpthread.so.0 (0xf712f000) libstdc++.so.6 => /usr/lib32/libstdc++.so.6 (0xf7041000) libm.so.6 => /lib32/libm.so.6 (0xf701b000) libgcc_s.so.1 => /usr/lib32/libgcc_s.so.1 (0xf700c000) libc.so.6 => /lib32/libc.so.6 (0xf6eae000) libX11.so.6 => /usr/lib32/libX11.so.6 (0xf6dbf000) libXext.so.6 => /usr/lib32/libXext.so.6 (0xf6daf000) libdl.so.2 => /lib32/libdl.so.2 (0xf6dab000) /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0xf7ee5000) libQtXml.so.4 => /usr/lib32/libQtXml.so.4 (0xf6d67000) libaudio.so.2 => /usr/lib32/libaudio.so.2 (0xf6d4f000) libpng12.so.0 => /usr/lib32/libpng12.so.0 (0xf6d29000) libSM.so.6 => /usr/lib32/libSM.so.6 (0xf6d1f000) libICE.so.6 => /usr/lib32/libICE.so.6 (0xf6d07000) libz.so.1 => /usr/lib32/libz.so.1 (0xf6cf1000) libglib-2.0.so.0 => /usr/lib32/libglib-2.0.so.0 (0xf6c3a000) libXi.so.6 => /usr/lib32/libXi.so.6 (0xf6c30000) libXrender.so.1 => /usr/lib32/libXrender.so.1 (0xf6c26000) libXrandr.so.2 => /usr/lib32/libXrandr.so.2 (0xf6c1e000) libfreetype.so.6 => /usr/lib32/libfreetype.so.6 (0xf6ba8000) libfontconfig.so.1 => /usr/lib32/libfontconfig.so.1 (0xf6b7b000) libgthread-2.0.so.0 => /usr/lib32/libgthread-2.0.so.0 (0xf6b75000) libxcb-xlib.so.0 => /usr/lib32/libxcb-xlib.so.0 (0xf6b72000) libxcb.so.1 => /usr/lib32/libxcb.so.1 (0xf6b58000) libXau.so.6 => /usr/lib32/libXau.so.6 (0xf6b55000) libXt.so.6 => /usr/lib32/libXt.so.6 (0xf6b04000) libpcre.so.3 => /lib32/libpcre.so.3 (0xf6ada000) libexpat.so.1 => /usr/lib32/libexpat.so.1 (0xf6ab3000) libXdmcp.so.6 => /usr/lib32/libXdmcp.so.6 (0xf6aad000) I did not get the error messages reported by others, specifically: ALSA lib ../../src/conf.c:2700:(snd_config_hooks_call) Cannot open shared library /usr/lib/alsa-lib/libasound_module_conf_pulse.so ALSA lib ../../../src/control/control.c:909:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL hw:0 From the GUI, I used Add/Remove Applications; selected “All Open Source applications” and added “Alsa Mixer” and installed it. Skype loads fine, (i.e. no crash) but I cannot hear anything on either speakers or the headset. The headset is a known “good” headset and works on other PCs. Had a saved recording, attempted to play it, but Skype would not play the recording. Recording plays fine on my Eee PC running Xandros...I can not upgrade it to Ubuntu until I have Skype working on the Pentium D (amd_64) tower. Ran speaker test – did not hear anything. I hope this helps someone more knowledgeable than I to know where to look and fix the problem.
