Bug Description

Binary package hint: humanity-icon-theme

When empathy is shown in the notification area, in gnome-panel or in avant-window-navigator for example, it's still the big green spot, but all others icons are grey. That's not very nice :)

Attached is a branch to symlink user-* icons, used in FUSA, for empathy.

The symlinks have been left on purpose.

Empathy still hasnt been updated to the latest specs. See:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=547261
https://bugs.launchpad.net/icon-naming-spec/+bug/401186

If we add symlinks for a transient problem , these would become redundant when the problem is fixed in empathy.

Thanks for the links :)
However, if it's not fixed in empathy in time for Karmic, this could be a good workaround. IMO It should be included in the package shipped on karmic (as a patch), without including it upstream (waiting for the correct fix).

Julien Lavergne , the indicator-session applet already uses the user-* icons. FUSA is depricated in Karmic .
So i dont see why this is essential to add the symlinks , only empathy messenger wont use the icons.

Why not file the bug in empathy ubuntu and fix it and send the patch upstream too .
Its not that the upstream devs havent agreed to fix it , its seems more, they havent got around to it yet.

I would rather suggest making the fix in empathy.

mac_v,
It's useful if you don't use indicator-session or if you use another another notification area (like in Awn). I am agree that it should be fixed in empathy, but this is quite more intrusive (changing libempthy-gtk/empathy-image.h, all hicolors_status* icons and the corresponding Makefile) than making temporally symlinks in the icon them. Also, this change in empathy will break others theme icons if they don't provide "fall back" to user-* icons. I'm still think that is not recommended to do this so close to the release.
And if the default is used, it's completely invisible because the empathy tray icon is hidden by default.

This is not true , as the change has been planned to move to the standard xdg naming specs , Themes will have to update at some point or the other... Upstream just hasnt got around to fixing it.
Also , the user-* names are to be used by all IM apps.

Another factor to remember , is that the default theme is not allowed to have app specific icons . Icons in the default theme are mostly generic. Previously, Humanity had several app specific icons , UX team had them removed.
