Bug Description

Binary package hint: human-theme

currently there is no background image for gnome panels, and they look flat. I think that adding a simple image to make them look 3d would be an improvement for eye-candy

confirming, although I personally use a whitish transparent colour, it could use some "pimping" :)

this feature exist from ages in Gnome Panel.
Right click on gnome-panel > Properties > Background > Background Image ..then select the right image (that you can do yourself in 3 minutes in Inkscape or Gimp OR you can download a proper image from the net).

Voila !.

I know this, thanks :) But there is no default image in human-theme,
and I think that there should be one

Currently, gnome-panel can't handle pixmap images correctly when user prefers to use the panel vertically, so you'll get a tiled pattern in case you like a vertical panel.
Shouldn't include a default panel background at least until it handles the background pixmap correctly, when switched to vertical view. This shouldn't be so hard though.

Isn't there a gconf option for vertical panels?
/apps/panel/toplevels/top_panel_screen0/background/rotate

This method isn't very good. The panel buttons disappear. The best way is to include a pixmap in the gtkrc for the panel background.

I noticed in the Gnome 2.24 objectives is to include themeing of the panel which I assume becomes part of the gtk engine and gtkrc.

U right,
mine is a quck & dirty. Generally we need a better solution with some
more options regarding theme applied to WM and gnome-panel - today
situation is more like a very quick solution [ to choose a file than
set as BG for Gnome Panel - it can be a transparent PNG indeed ], we
need something integrated with "Themes Preferences", so the BG
transparency could be set in some kind of individual mode -> shared from
Compiz OR from Metacity - depend on your WM engine.
