Bug Description

Binary package hint: cups

Created a document in Libre Writer.
Selected "print"
Chose "properties" for printer
Went to the "Device" tab
Selected "Print Quality"
Selected "Normal Grayscale".

When doing the above, my print job would error out. If I left the settings default, it would print which would be fine except at best it wastes color ink and at worst it prints nothing (no color ink left).

Looks like a problem with the hpcups driver: prnt/hpcups/Pcl3Gui.cpp 75: Requested resolution not supported with requested printmodeprnt/hpcups/HPCupsFilter.cpp 420: m_Job initialization failed with error = 25

Can you try changing the driver to "hpijs" in System > Administration > Printing (system-config-printer):
Right-click your printer > Properties > Make and Model > Change ...
Does it print grayscale now?

Changed in cups (Ubuntu):
status: New → Incomplete
affects: cups (Ubuntu) → hplip (Ubuntu)

To switch drivers I had to:
sudo apt-get install hpijs-ppds
Power menu -> System Settings -> "Printing"
Right-click your printer > Properties > Make and Model > Change ...
"Provide PPD File"
Browse to /usr/share/ppd/hplip/HP/
Select my printer

"Normal Grayscale" then worked.

Also I tested "Draft Grayscale" under the hpcups driver and that worked.

Can someone at HP look into this? Seems that (at least some) printers cannot print normal quality grayscale with the hpcups driver but with the hpijs driver they do.

Changed in hplip:

Hi,

Thanks for reporting the bug in HPLIP. To help us understand and analyze the issue please follow following things.

=> Upgrade to latest HPLIP version (3.11.7) from http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/index.html

=> Remove all the print queues by running "hp-toolbox" command and then add the printer currently connected.

=> Then do the following things to capture some logs.

    a)Open /etc/cups/cupsd.conf in root mode and replace

        LogLevel warn

          with

       LogLevel debug
       hpLogLevel 15

    b) Open Terminal and run following commands:
       => su
       => /etc/init.d/cups restart
                  or
       => service cups restart
       => cd /tmp
       => rm *.out
       => rm *.bmp
       => hp-check -t > /tmp/hpcheck.log

    c) Try to print the file and then send
          => /var/log/syslog (if present),
          => /var/log/messages (if present),
          => /var/log/cups/error_log
          => /tmp/*.bmp
          => /tmp/*.out
          => /tmp/hpcheck.log
          => document used for printing.

I resolved with the advice of Pascal De Vuyst (pascal-devuyst).

I have an HP Deskjet 840C

I selected "HP Deskjet 840c hpijs, 3.11.1 [en]" instead of "HP Deskjet 840c, hpcups 3.11.1 [en](reccomend)
