2010-06-06 23:53:10 Garry Leach description Binary package hint: gdm HPLIP 1) Ubuntu 10.04 2) HPLIP 3.10.2-2; CUPS 1.4.3.-1 3) I recently re-built 10.04 on a new hard drive. I hadn't used HPLIP before, so I installed that, & it recognised my HP printer immediately. I don't leave my PC running all of the time. 4) The next time that I wanted to use the printer: 1. The printer wasn't recognised by HPLIP 2. The PPD file wasn't found. 3. CUPS could access localhost 631 (or whatever it is called). My actions: 1. I re-installed HPLIP; this did not fix the problem. 2. I checked the list of PPD's; my printer wasn't listed, so added in some (from package hpijs I think). That added an ijs driver for my printer. But that didn't fix the problem. 3. I re-installed cups. This DID fix the problem. However, the next time that I wanted to use the printer, it again wasn't recognised & localhost631 was again not available. 4. I re-installed cups. This DID fix the problem, once again. From following the debugging procedure, I have the following list from the terminal: As you will see, it is OK now, as I mentioned in 4. So, I suppose that I need to repeat these steps next time that it fails. garry@gl-desktop1:~$ lsmod | grep usb usblp 10481 0 usb_storage 39425 1 garry@gl-desktop1:~$ tail -f /var/log/messages Jun 7 06:42:39 gl-desktop1 os-prober: debug: running /usr/lib/os-probes/mounted/80minix on mounted /dev/sde1 Jun 7 06:42:39 gl-desktop1 os-prober: debug: running /usr/lib/os-probes/mounted/90linux-distro on mounted /dev/sde1 Jun 7 06:42:39 gl-desktop1 os-prober: debug: running /usr/lib/os-probes/mounted/90solaris on mounted /dev/sde1 Jun 7 07:45:30 gl-desktop1 kernel: [41916.377166] python[10364]: segfault at 0 ip (null) sp bf974e9c error 4 in libcrypto.so.0.9.8[110000+138000] Jun 7 07:47:01 gl-desktop1 kernel: [42006.674713] type=1505 audit(1275860821.146:15): operation="profile_replace" pid=10550 name="/usr/lib/cups/backend/cups-pdf" Jun 7 07:47:01 gl-desktop1 kernel: [42006.675563] type=1505 audit(1275860821.146:16): operation="profile_replace" pid=10550 name="/usr/sbin/cupsd" Jun 7 07:47:02 gl-desktop1 kernel: [42008.149664] usb 1-8: usbfs: interface 1 claimed by usblp while 'usb' sets config #1 Jun 7 07:57:05 gl-desktop1 kernel: [42611.275418] usblp0: removed Jun 7 08:58:28 gl-desktop1 kernel: [46294.490656] usb 1-8: USB disconnect, address 4 Jun 7 08:58:29 gl-desktop1 udev-configure-printer: Disabled printer ipp://localhost:631/printers/Photosmart-C5300-series as the corresponding device was unplugged or turned off Jun 7 08:58:29 gl-desktop1 udev-configure-printer: Disabled printer ipp://localhost:631/printers/Photosmart-C5300-series as the corresponding device was unplugged or turned off Jun 7 08:59:28 gl-desktop1 kernel: [46354.430147] usb 1-7: USB disconnect, address 7 Jun 7 08:59:46 gl-desktop1 kernel: [46371.824022] usb 1-8: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 8 Jun 7 08:59:46 gl-desktop1 kernel: [46371.957152] usb 1-8: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice Jun 7 08:59:46 gl-desktop1 kernel: [46371.958608] usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 8 if 1 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0x03F0 pid 0x7111 Jun 7 08:59:46 gl-desktop1 kernel: [46371.959475] scsi7 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices Jun 7 08:59:47 gl-desktop1 kernel: [46373.029029] usb 1-8: usbfs: interface 1 claimed by usblp while 'usb' sets config #1 Jun 7 08:59:49 gl-desktop1 udev-configure-printer: Re-enabled printer ipp://localhost:631/printers/Photosmart-C5300-series Jun 7 08:59:49 gl-desktop1 udev-configure-printer: Re-enabled printer ipp://localhost:631/printers/Photosmart-C5300-series Jun 7 08:59:51 gl-desktop1 kernel: [46376.956774] scsi 7:0:0:0: Direct-Access HP Photosmart C5300 1.00 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5 Jun 7 08:59:51 gl-desktop1 kernel: [46376.959558] sd 7:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg2 type 0 Jun 7 08:59:51 gl-desktop1 kernel: [46376.961026] sd 7:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk Jun 7 09:00:42 gl-desktop1 kernel: [46427.898707] usblp0: removed Jun 7 09:00:48 gl-desktop1 kernel: [46434.283691] python[10912]: segfault at 0 ip (null) sp bfbee46c error 4 in libnetsnmp.so.15.1.2[110000+90000] ^C garry@gl-desktop1:~$ lpinfo -v network ipp network socket direct scsi network lpd network http serial serial:/dev/ttyS0?baud=115200 serial serial:/dev/ttyS1?baud=115200 network beh network smb direct parallel:/dev/lp0 direct usb://HP/Photosmart%20C5300%20series?serial=MY958BF0M1054V&interface=1 direct hp:/usb/Photosmart_C5300_series?serial=MY958BF0M1054V direct hpfax garry@gl-desktop1:~$ Binary package hint: hplip HPLIP 1) Ubuntu 10.04 2) HPLIP 3.10.2-2; CUPS 1.4.3.-1 3) I recently re-built 10.04 on a new hard drive.
