Bug Description

Binary package hint: hplip

Hi,
I'm on an originally ubuntu machine but using KDE4 (kubuntu-desktop). I upgraded from jaunty to karmic RC 2 days ago.
My HP Photosmart C6280 (device URI hp://...) got automatically copied to a new printer with device URI "usb://HP/Photosmart%20C6200%20series?serial=MY7AOH23Z30506" (hp:// -> usb://).

The hp:// printer did not work anymore, I could not issue to print a test page. From hp-systray, the printer was shown as disconnected or connection error. So I removed it, remaining only with the usb:// printer.

Using hpijs 3.9.8.36, I can print a test page on the usb:// printer from the KDE4 System Settings -> Printer Configuration without problems.

But: since then, hp-systray does not start anymore, but exits with the following output:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
$ hp-systray

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.9.8)
System Tray Status Service ver. 2.0

under certain conditions. See COPYING file for more details.

warning: No hp: or hpfax: devices found in any installed CUPS queue. Exiting.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I guess, hplip should also recognize usb: printers, if they are using hpijs.
Or KDE4 should keep recognizing hp: printers...

If I change the usb:// into hp:// for the existing printer, I cannot print a test page. I get the message "Test page submitted as job XY", but the test page remains in the Document Print Status (systray printing queue) without any sign that the printer knows anything about the print job.

If you installed HPLIP manually before upgrading and then did the upgrade, you will more than likely need to reinstall HPLIP for it to work correctly again.

Hi Aaron, thanks for your comment!

I'm not completely sure if I installed hplip manually. I'd think I did not, but maybe I did (a few releases ago, possibly).

Do you mean I should --purge remove it and the install again? Or dpkg --reconfigure?

What's the technical background of this matter? As far as I know all packages are upgraded, not only automatically installed ones. So why would I need to reinstall a package after an upgrade to make it work again? (Please don't understand this question as sarcastic - really I just want to understand what is going on :) )

I did $ sudo apt-get --purge remove hplip
and $ sudo apt-get install hplip hpijs-ppds hplip-gui

but running hp-systray, I still get this output:

PS: I could force the manager to start anyway, with hp-systray -x.

There, I could add a new printer, and my printer on the USB port was recongized and registered as hp:/usb/Photosmart_C6200_series?serial=MY7AOH23Z30506

- I can print a test page from the KDE4 system settings -> printer configuration.
- I could also print a test page from the HP device manager (via hp-systray)

So for me this is resolved, but as a bug I think we cannot close it yet.
There should not be a need to uninstall and reinstall a package, then find out about a switch to force-start a helper app, and then add a printer that existed before.

If reinstalling HPLIP works then it's not an issue with HPLIP but could be an issue with the upgrade path. Till--any comments?

This wouldn't be an issue with HPLIP, per se, but with how Ubuntu does the upgrade. Someone from Ubuntu may have some other comments, but as of right now I wouldn't consider this an issue with HPLIP.

Thanks for your support and feedback--we greatly appreciate it.
