Bug Description

Binary package hint: hplip

After an upgrade some time in the past two weeks, printing to my HP PSC 750 has stopped working correctly. Color print jobs come out squished against the right margin; black&white print jobs come out printing at 1/4 size, with the quarter to the right of the actual print output filled with what looks like a barcode.

Are your other printer (laser printers, PDF printer, Samba share) working correctly?

The error_log does not show any error or irregularity in the print job, looks like the problem is driver-internal.

I don't have any other printers.

Which means what, then?

Ok, I see that the "other printers" refers to the list of other configured printers on the system, which were included in the apport info. All of these printer configs refer to printers on other networks, not anything that's available to me here. I don't even have cups-pdf installed, I just haven't bothered removing the config entry. If there's something specific you'd like me to test, please let me know.

Adding HPLIP upstream task.

Can anyone at HP look into this problem? Thanks in advance.

I've seen similar things with my PSC 2175 - print outs are scaled down by 50% (quarter area) by default, or really tiny when using kprinter filters such as pamphlet.

Distro: opensuse 11.1
HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.9.6b)
Printer/Fax Setup Utility ver. 9.0

Originally I had this issue with the packman packages, so I uninstalled them and reinstalled direct from the hp page as per
this process...
http://forums.opensuse.org/hardware/417563-hplip-hosed-yet-again-after-recent-updates-05-july-2009-a.html#post2015070

But it made no difference.

I set print quality to draft as per https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/392040, but that does not solve the issue when printing using kprinter filters. It does fix printing without kprinter filters.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Can everyone who has this problem switch the printout quality options to other settings then "Normal"? Does "Draft", "High", "Best", "Photo" work correctly?

I don't know; the printer config is now broken completely, showing me this error message:

Filter "hpcups" for printer "PSC-750" not available: No such file or directory

I certainly didn't remove any filters by hand, so something has further broken my printer setup on upgrade.

BTW, before this latest breakage I *did* test with draft, and that didn't work either.

Is the hplip-cups package installed on your system?

Plrease attach your PPD file, /etc/cups/ppd/PSC-750.ppd

After that, can you try the following:

lpadmin -p PSC-750 -E -m drv:///hpijs.drv/hp-psc_750-hpijs.ppd

Does it work now?

Do also (hplip-cups must be installed)

lpadmin -p PSC-750 -E -m drv:///hpcups.drv/hp-psc_750.ppd

Does this work?

Given that changing the PPD gets printing working, does that give enough information to fix the bug? Would direct access to the hardware make any difference here?

The differences between the not-working PPD which you have attached and the working hpcups PPD you can see below.

Try to return to your original PPD via

lpadmin -p PSC-750 -E -P PSC-750.ppd

Does it stop working now? If so, apply each change show below manually to your /etc/cups/ppd/PSC-750.ppd and do not forget to restart CUPS after each change. Tell which change actually makes the printer working again.\

Reapplied the original .ppd with 'lpadmin -p PSC-750 -E -P PSC-750.ppd'. Printing still works. Is it possible that this was fixed incidentally in some package change along the way, or did running this lpadmin command overwrite some other setting that was relevant?

Sorry for the late reply.

The command 'lpadmin -p PSC-750 -E -P PSC-750.ppd' dooes the following:

- Replacing the queue's PPD with the given PPD ('-P <ppd>')
- Enabling the queue and making it accepting jobs ('-E')

Nothing else is done by this command.

It is possible that some recent updates can have fixed it. There were especially manu uploads of the CUPS package.

As your printer works again I am closing this bug report.
