According to Synaptic Package Manager, it is running hplip 3.17.10+repack0-5

I managed to persuade the printer to work but not very well. Thank you for the link. I have downloaded the .run file and will reinstall Ubuntu 18.04 and run hplip-3.18.4.run as instructed.
Will keep in touch.
