mute key does not work on Thinkpad X61

Bug Description

pressing the "mute" key turns off the sound but the volume control does not react to it in any way. Pressing the mute key again, does not unmute the sound.
This is Thinkpad X61 7675, Ubuntu 7.10

This bug seems to have been fixed, I don't know what exactly fixed it, but mute button works now.

this bug reappeared in Ubuntu 8.04

Confir Ani report, it reappeared in Hardy, it did work in Gutys (Thinkpad X61).

For me this was not a bug at all.
I liked the feature that I can mute the volume at hardware level so that the
Thinkpad won't make any Sound (useful for lectures or library).

Is there a way to get this "bug" back?
