Bug Description
Description: Ubuntu 11.10
Release: 11.10
Followings two scenario's hit hibernate problems
scenario 1: Installation of Ubuntu without creation of swap partition, swap partition in created afterwards.
scenario 2: Creation of new swap partition.
The problem is that a user is able to hibernate the system but at restart, the system is not able to resume since in both scenario's the grub settings, nor /etc/initramfs-
The bug: Ubuntu presents users the option to hibernate his computer, the hibernate is also performed, even when the system is not setup to resume correctly from hibernation.
Possible solutions for the bug:
- Current behaviour of Ubuntu is to present the hibernate option when a swap partition is used. This has to be changed. The option can only be shown when the computer is able to resume from hibernate (for example simple resume settings like GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX parameter in grub, ...toolsConf.
- when a user selects to hibernate the computer, it should be checked first that the computer is able to resume from hibernation.e If this is not the case, at least the user should be warned that the resume from hibernation will not work. Best of course to not let the hibernation start at all.
- Ubuntu no longer automatically shows the hibernate option. In one of the system settings menu's hibernation has to be selected explicitly by the user. When hibernation is actviated, Ubuntu can only provide the option after verification that hibernate/resume will work.
