Bug Description

Hi,

First I tried to install postfix dependencies using.
apt-get build-dep postfix
But this command failed with an error. (But I could not write down the error).

After that gcc stopped working.
I looked at synpatic package manager. gcc was available in it.
Then I tried to upgrade gcc. But still it gave an error.
Removing and reinstalling also failed.
Finally i tried to upgrade ubuntu to varsion 10 from 9 using Update Manager.
Everything worked fine except for gcc. Update Manager also reported the problem automatically.

Ubuntu version (now) =10.04 LTS
apt-cache policy gcc =
gcc:
  Installed: 4:4.4.3-1ubuntu1
  Candidate: 4:4.4.3-1ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 4:4.4.3-1ubuntu1 0
        500 http://mv.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Thanks.

output of ls -l /usr/bin/gcc* is

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 21 2010-09-06 11:14 /usr/bin/gcc -> /usr/bin/gcc-4.4
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 220428 2010-03-27 03:46 /usr/bin/gcc-4.4.real

It seems link is created to a wrong file.
I deleted /usr/bin/gcc and recreated gcc to link to gcc-4.4.real.
Not gcc command seems to work fine.

gcc doesn't modify these symlinks, but hardening-wrapper. but I assume it may be confused by the manually modified symlinks.

affects: gcc-defaults (Ubuntu) → hardening-wrapper (Ubuntu)

Thanks Matthias Klose.

Actually I got an error while doing
apt-get build-dep postfix with hardening-wrapper. I cannot remember the exact error.
If I find anything else I ll post.
Anyway I think it is not a bug in ubuntu.

I removed gcc and gcc-4.4 using synaptic package manager.
Then I installed hardening-wrapper, gcc and gcc-4.4 using synaptic package manager.
Now everything works fine.
