Embedded subtitles are not detected

The version of handbrake in the Ubuntu archives does not detect embedded subtitles. As a consequence, the options in the "Subtitle list" tab are always empty. Even, when clicking "Add" the option radio button for embedded subtitles is grey out and only the option to add srt files is available. I tried with sevaral video files with different video encondings.

This does *not* happen with the handbrake supplied by the handbrake ppa (https://launchpad.net/~stebbins/+archive/ubuntu/handbrake-releases). Although the same version, the ppa version works as expected.

Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

Same problem here. Handbrake works fine in 14.04, but in 16.04, it does not see the subtitles in the video files. Same problem in both Ubunty Unity 16.04 and KDE Neon also based on 16.04. Very annoying as one loses the subtitles.

Does anyone have a work-around. It must be some kind of library, seems so work fine in the Windows versions of Handbrake.

Same problem also in artful (17.10), as workaround I installed zesty version package from ppa (there is not artful version yet).
