Caused by revision 170 in hald, removing /etc/init.d/hal - meaning that invoke-rc.d cannot restart hald in halevt postinst.

Workaround - comment out the line "invoke-rc.d --quiet hal restart" in /var/lib/dpkg/info/halevt.postinst, run "dpkg --configure -a", and reboot.
