Bug Description

When you copy a file to a USB stick there is a progress bar (the usual nautilus one) popping up to tell you when the transfer is done, however it reports that its done after just some seconds (too soon) and if you then try to unmount the memory stick, it will tell you that its still copying files. This is a pretty major bug for those who uses such devices and could lead to corrupted data because the user assumes that its done and just pulls the stick out.

Here is a thread in the forum about this issue: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=655136

Changed the bug rapport because this affects more than just sony ericsson phones.

[Old description] After a upgrade sometime in breezy ubuntu has been unable to transfer files from the computer to my Sony Ericsson K750i. It mounts perfectly when I plug it in, but when I copy something to it, the "copy splash" is there for some seconds and then goes away telling me that its done, but its not. When I unmount my phone and try to use the files, I can see the filenames, but they doesn't work.

However if I leave the phone alone for a while after it has said that its done, it will eventualy finnish the copying leaving me to this conclution:

The files do copy, but the "copysplash" goes away too fast.

This has been a problem with other Sony Ericsson phones for other users too.

Hope you are able to fix this! [/Old description]

Hi!

Can we get some confirmation from others with problems with a Sony Ericsson phone? Or a website or a forum?

Thanks

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Thanks in advance.

Yes, this is still an issue, both for the K750i and my new W850i (might be a Sony Ericsson spesific problem and it occures both on my laptop and my desktop. This is not a big problem since the phone (memory card) won't unmount before the transfere really is done, but it would be nice to have a realistic figure on how long its going to take.

Are you still using Breezy? How exactly do you go about copying the files is this via Nautilus?

I will, when I got time test this on two other computers with ubuntu just to make sure it isn't a problem spesific to my two computers.

Feisty with Konqueror (Kubuntu). Same here, but with a Sony Ericsson W200i.

When trying to unmount from desktop via right click > safe eject (sorry, don't know what's the menu entry in english) it will take a couple of minutes and then fail, informing me nicely of lots of processes apparently using the device. Among others, getty, all running on root. However, lsof difers...

if I wait long enough eventually the copy finishes and I can unplug...

Any idea if there is anyone working on this?

Just wanted to say that I tried on Windows and file transfer is extremely slow in this phone and the K750i. By slow I mean slower than half a USB 1.1 connection. A 6MB file can take up to 2 minutes to transfer. I transferred 1.4GB worth of music to the phone in about 5 hours (!!!). No difference by using the software provided by Sony with the phone.

Now, all problems on Ubuntu I had when transferring large amounts of data, say 100MB. My guess is that the umount operation simply fails because the device is still in use, still flushing all data to the phone. As far as I understand it, files are not written to a USB removable disk straight away, but at umount time.

Is there any way of mounting this kind of devices so data is written straight away to disk instead of waiting for umount? This way the user will see the file transfer dialog for all the actual amount of time files are written to the device, instead of flashing for 1 second and then needing two hours to umount silently, which users will find confusing...

I am having exactly the same problem. Let me know if my logs are needed, then I can post them.

This is still a problem with Gutsy.

The copying message shows up whenever it feels like it, sometimes even late. It also offers no progress bar, leaving you wondering when will it finish.

The title should be changed to gutsy now, and to all data USB devices though.

this is still a problem, i can confirm it with a current kubuntu and a sony ericcson k610i.
in gkrellm i can see that the device (sdb) is still being accessed when the progress bar claims to be at 100%.
and what may be special about kubuntu instead of ubuntu: the kio_file-window stays open until it really finished copying, but the bar stays at 100% for ages ;-)
