LCD brightness icon doesn't appear for a long time, icon display is garbled

Bug Description
On a Dell D500: the Gnome LCD brightness OSD takes a long time to appear (about 15 seconds). Once it does, it shows junk data (previous screen contents, e.g. web page, terminal window) for a long time (about a minute), the first time the brightness is adjusted.
After the first time, there is just the 15-second delay before showing brightness, and on this laptop the brightness level is not displayed at all.
Using dbus-monitor, the OSD appears as soon as the dbus event is seen; the lag is between the button-press and the dbus event.
