For me too.

Samsung P35 Notebook
Ubuntu 7.10 (10/15/07 Daily Image)

I can solve the problem when i kill "gnome-power-manager"

Same problem with my Samsung P35 and Ubuntu 7.10 Final.
I solve it temporary by pressing CTRL+ALT+Backspace.
