Bug Description

Binary package hint: upstart

I have a Rio Forge MP3 player. On my old computer, when you plugged the Forge into the USB port, the appropriate icons appeared on the desktop. Unfortunately, that computer was killed by lightning and I recently had to purchase a new computer.

On the new computer, which also has Feisty installed, when you plug the Rio Forge into the USB port, nothing happens. The computer knows the device is plugged in, as evidenced by Hardware Information and lsusb. However, it doesn't create the appropriate desktop or Computer icons, nor does it even have a listing in /dev so it could be mounted manually.

All my other USB drives (card reader, flash drive, hard drive) work just fine.

The only time the Forge will work is if it's plugged in at the beginning of the boot process. If it's plugged in then, then when you log into the computer, the appropriate icons are on the desktop, and if you unplug it then plug it back in again later, the icons are recreated appropriately, but this only works until the computer is rebooted or shut off.

Again, the Forge only mounts properly if plugged in during the beginning of the boot process. Could it be a result of the new init system? Either way, it seems to be a most inconvenient bug.

I used the command "gnomevfs-monitor /dev" and then plugged in the Forge. The attached file is the output from that command, showing that the system definately knows it's getting plugged in, even though it's not creating the appropriate /dev/sd* files, and it's not mounting the device or creating the desktop icons.

Sometimes plugging in the Forge, then unplugging it and immediately plugging it back in again will get the device to be recognized properly, mounted, and have the desktop icons created, but not always.

I tried this with the Gutsy Gibbon LiveCD alpha and met with the same results.
