Had the issue with Jaunty, ZTE MF627 didn't work.

Made invalid by the changes to HAL and device-kit.

Would be great to have this working out of the box in Lucid.

This is working on lucid, you just have to umount the device to work with modem. (right click eject).

I'd forgotten about this. Marking as Fix Released as it works on Lucid and later.
