Cannot add Facebook (ubuntu Maverick -10.10)

Went to add Facebook account
authorised successfully with Facebook.
Facebook account did NOT appear in the left hand column in the 'add' window

Facebook does not appear to link into Gwibber from there.

Note: System was a straight upgrade from 10.04, and Gwibber had worked fine on that.
Tried the advice from one forum to remove the desktop couch cache via
DANGER do not run this command unless you know what you're doing - it deletes files recursively.

this didn't appear to have any effect on the gwibber application's performance.
