Bug Description

Greetings:

Ubuntu 11.10
Nautilus 3.2.1

As the attached screen shot below shows, we ARE able to see Windows PCs on our network from Ubuntu's NAUTILUS, yet we are NOT able to access their shares from NAUTILUS, even though they work fine with each other, i.e. each Windows PC IS able access the other Windows PC's shares just fine.

Please infer from this information the answers to any questions about our situation you may have.

Note this is a default/pristine configuration, i.e. no changes have been made whatsoever.

Linux tite-HP-630-Notebook-PC 3.0.0-15-generic #26-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 20 17:23:00 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Eric Sean Tite Webber

How is this of low importance? It renders samba useless.

the bug is low because it affects one user so far, samba browsing works for most people, the setup in that case is probably special... does smbclient works for browsing those shares?

From what I could gather, there are more people affected than that. I found many posts. Like http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1815360 for instance. And the solution provided here does not work. I have Ubuntu 12.04 and still the same issue

Same problem here on Ubuntu 12.04. I'm on a large network, but I can only access a few hosts over SMB with Nautilus. On most hosts I get this "Failed to retrieve share list from server" error. The "smbclient -L host" command works for every host.

As far as I can tell the problem occurs only for specific SMB host OS'es. Both Windows 2008 hosts I tried were unaccessible through Nautilus, while the Linux host I tried (smbd 3.X) could succesfully be accessed. But there are probably other factors involved.

Same problem here confirmed Ubuntu 10.04 - 1 machine, Ubuntu 12.04 , 2 machines.
none can browse if samba even installed locally or remote.
Had been working fine on 10.04, can not say re:12.04
just adding my observation, I think it's actually affecting more than you think but people assume it's not working because they think they've done something wrong.
btw . this next comment is biased yet I am remaining calm about it. again with a systemic problem with gvfs and again with the "low priority" cause no one seems bothered by the fact that it broke ... oh only a teensy thing like ease of access to server shares.
2 bug for me , same attitude. why is this even included in a distro?
