Bug Description

This happens in both Jaunty and Karmic. I do not recall, being new to Ubuntu, whether it ever worked, but I seem to remember being able to transfer all files without any problems.

From home, I connect to my workplace server using Secure WebDAV. After doing so, the drive is mounted and I can browse files. I can change any file's name on the server, and I can delete any file. I can upload files.

But if I try to download (drag and drop or copy and paste) any OpenOffice file format, the file is "not found." I can go to the file's properties and find its size and such, so it is not truly missing.

If I try to simply open the OO file, it is of "an unknown type"--despite the fact that a copy of the same file on my local filesystem opens with a simple doubleclick.

If I try to open, for instance, a DOC file, it works (and it is OO Writer which opens it). The same is true of PDF files.

Another recent WebDAV error occurred which may be related: when trying to copy a folder from the WebDAV to my desktop, a single file, which is an html list of the files in that folder, is created rather than an actual folder full of files.

I have done no alterations to the system, but I have installed updates regularly.

New information: changing the file extension allows the file to be downloaded.

Change an ODT file's extension to any extension that works, and the file may be downloaded successfully. It does not matter what the extension is, as long as it belongs to a file type that successfully transfers. Once the ODT file is downloaded, the extension may be changed once again to ODT and the file opened without problem. Of course this workaround is not practical, but it does add a clue.

These extensions work: DOC, PDF, HTML, JPG
So far, these extensions do not work: ODT, WPD.

The problem appears to be essentially with the extension rather than the actual file's content.

Sounds like your WebDAV server is not setting the relevant MIME-type?

Another clue: this problem did not occur on an XP box, with which I was able to download/upload ODT and WPD files. I have been unable to discuss this with the administrators of my WebDAV resource.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. A new version of GVFS is available in both Lucid and Maverick and we are wondering if this is still reproducible in any of those versions, May you please test and give us of feedback about it? Thanks in advance.

I downloaded Lucid and ran it as a live CD. The problem remains exactly as
described. I can download and then open PDFs, RTFs, but not ODTs, for which
I get a "not found" or "unknown type" error depending upon exactly what I
do.

Thank you for your attention to it. Thank you.

As a side note, I don't think I'll upgrade to Lucid. I prefer the look and
feel of Karmic; also, Lucid's web fonts were poorly rendered on the live CD.
That might be fixable were I to upgrade, but I have Karmic working as I
like. If GVFS were working better, that would have changed my mind as I
miss the functionality, but I'm making do.

Another piece to the puzzle: I have tried removing the extension completely. The behavior is the same as if the extension were ODT. The file is "Not Found." Replacing the ODT extension with almost any other common extension results in my being able to move the files to my local machine, where I can restore the correct extension and use the file normally.

Here's a few more files gvfs doesn't seem to like in a secure WebDAV:
.emf - Enhanced Windows Metafile
.mxd, ,aux, .tbx, ,rrd - Files associated with ESRI's ArcGIS Desktop, which is a Windows-only application.
