Bug Description

I have 3 machines on my network of which 2 were running 7.10 Gutsy and one running Windows XP Pro. With Samba installed and configured on the Ubuntu machines it was possible using 'Places > Network' to see the shares on both the other Ubuntu and the Windows machine.

Both Ubuntu machines were then upgraded to 8.04 Hardy and since the upgrade I can only see the shares on the other Ubuntu machine with this method, I cannot see the shares on the XP machine.

However if I click 'Places' then 'Connect to Server' and enter the full share name for the Windows computer e.g. 'XPmachine/shareddocs' then enter the password for the Windows machine and click 'Connect' the Windows shares appear mounted on the desktop and I then have full read/write access. This is, however, relatively inconvenient.

I subsequently added a fourth machine to the network and installed Intrepid 8.10 on it just for test purposes and I can confirm that this machine had the same problem as the Hardy machines. Then I installed Gutsy on it again just to make sure that I could see the Windows shares via 'Places > Network', which I can.

Seems to be related to a browsing issue in nautilus.

Thanks for the report, are you still seeing this issue with Jaunty?

could you describe what you do exactly then and what is the issue and how to trigger the bug?

Hi Sebastien.

I click 'Places' in the top panel, followed by 'Network' from the dropdown menu and my 3 currently connected machines appear in the file browser window. I am working on machine 1 (Ubuntu 8.04), so I double click the icon for machine 3 (Ubuntu 8.04) and the shares on that machine appear in the browser window. If I repeat the operation but double click the icon for machine 2 (Win XP) then the rotating symbol appears briefly and then disappears again and the file browser window is blank, ie the shares on the XP machine are not displayed. If I double click the icon for my own machine the shares are displayed fine.

I can repeat this from machine 3 and the results are the same in that I can see the shares on the 2 Ubuntu machines (1 and 3), but again not the shares on the XP machine 2.

If I click 'My Network Places' on the XP machine, all shares on all 3 machines are displayed fine.

I hope that is an accurate enough description for you,

best regards,

Bob

ok, that's a better description of the issue, do you need to enter a password to browse shares on the winxp box?

If I want to browse shares on the winxp box from a Ubuntu box by the alternative method of clicking 'Places' then 'Connect to Server' and enter the full share name for the winxp box 'machine2/shareddocs' then I need to enter the password for the winxp box before clicking 'Connect'.

If I want to browse shares on the local network from the winxp box then I do not need to enter a password.

you didn't reply to the comment, does the winxp box require a login to see shares? ie would an another winxp asks you for a password there? could be bug #207072

I didn't have another winxp box to try that, but I've attached one to the network now and the answer is no it doesn't.
