Bug Description

to some ftp servers I can't connect no more since release 8.04 (with places->connect to server), I get a "invalid answer" message.
With every other ftp-client (also in the shell) I can connect without problems to the same server. It seems
to be a problem only on some servers, the other work normal.
With filezilla I compared the messages coming from the working and the not-working servers, and it looks
exactly the same. I even tried to connect to the server using the IP instead of the URL, without success.
Could it be that the problem is some chracter-encoding issue?
I would rellay love to have this working, because I like to work directly on ftp for web-developping, and
there's no editor with a really handy ftp-support (like I know from ultraedit in windows). Bluefish can
work directly on ftp itself, but the bookmarking of the servers is quite nasty.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in gvfs.

thank you for your bug report. could you run /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd -r on a command line and then try to use gvfs-mount to mount the server and attach the log? could be similar to bug #236114

if you tell me which log, I can do that. what does
gvfs-mount? do you mean mount the non-working
ftp-server? how? I tried gvfs-mount [ftp-server],
but theres no reaction at all. in the system log
I could find nothing that seemed to be related
to gvfsd.

i ran /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd -r too but nothing happened. So i Ctrl+c.

I tested on several ftp servers and it never worked since Hardy+gvfs (I started to test this feature since the firtst alphas). Worked like a charm on Gutsy. Well it worked with hardy on ftp servers without a login like iso repositories of ubuntu.

I was wondering if the login to a ftp server wilth login/password ever worked for someone ?

Sebastien : I read the bug #236114 you mentionned and the server i am trying to connect seems to be configured the same way than in the related bug.

You say that this issue is known and a bug is filled at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=520399 but the status is unconfirmed since 2008-03-06, hasn't been triagged from now on and there is no target.

Is someone working on it or are we left alone :-) ?

Thx in advance.
