Bug Description

After a clean install of Hardy Heron, nautilus stopped being able to detect the samba shares on other Windows XP computers. However, I know that the share still exists, because I can use smb4k to mount it onto the filesystem and browse it. However, I don't want to have to do that. I want to use Nautilus.

Attached is a screenshot of nautilus and smb4k next to each other. As you can see, there are shares on the network inside mshome, but nautilus can't see them. This has not been a problem in previous versions of Ubuntu.

I can confirm this problem with nautilus and samba shares using nautilus 2.22.3 along with a few other problems.

The following is from my .xsessions-errors file:

I don't even use samba.

thank you for your bug report, does the machine requires authentification to be browsed?

No, the machine requires no authentication to browse the shares.

In addition, if I run MS Windows in a virtual machine, it can see and browse the shares flawlessly, so I know that it should be possible. I'm pretty sure that the virtual machine just uses packet forwarding, so any request that it makes, it looks like my computer is making it. It does not have its own IP address.

does using smbc to browse the shares work correctly? what about gnomevfs-ls?

Revision history for this message
Collin Stocks (collinstocks) wrote :

smbc freezes and gnomevfs-ls is as follows:

collin@collin-laptop:~$ gnomevfs-ls smb://
mshome (Regular, application/x-desktop) size 0
collin@collin-laptop:~$ gnomevfs-ls smb://mshome
COLLIN-LAPTOP (Regular, application/x-desktop) size 0
SLARTIBARTFAST (Regular, application/x-desktop) size 0
collin@collin-laptop:~$ gnomevfs-ls smb://SLARTIBARTFAST
Error opening: Timeout reached
collin@collin-laptop:~$ gnomevfs-ls smb://COLLIN-LAPTOP
collin@collin-laptop:~$

again, there is no authentication set up for SLARTIBARTFAST, but there is for COLLIN-LAPTOP. There is supposed to be one directory in COLLIN-LAPTOP, that being "print$"

which of those are you trying to browse? does gvfs-ls lists those correctly?

Collin Stocks (collinstocks) wrote :

I'm trying to browse SLARTIBARTFAST, which does not require authentication. However, the listing is incorrect for COLLIN-LAPTOP. This is not surprising, though, since COLLIN-LAPTOP requires authentication.

The workaround works like a charm, and should be put into an upgrade/release.

exactly the same problem here.

I have 6 Ubuntu 8.04.1 machines and all of them developed the same problem at about the same time. The workaround noted above of editing smb.conf worked in all 6 machines. It does take about 44 seconds for the Places > Network applet to appear, but after that, browsing the network is fine. I also had to log off and back on to get it to work.

declining the gutsy task since gvfs is new in hardy, the workaround indicates the issue is a samba config one and not a bug

could you try if that's still an issue using current intrepid updates or jaunty?
