Bug Description

Binary package hint: gvfs

Thanks to the newly activated archive backend, upon right clicking an archive file and choosing "Open with Archive Mounter", the archive is mounted and can be browsed like a folder. However, "drives" mounted this way are represented by an unmounted drive icon in computer:/// and the Places menu.

The nautilus change will not be used by default in hardy so that's technically not an hardy issue, to send to the upstream bugzilla though

Changed in gvfs:

importance: Undecided → Wishlist
status: New → Confirmed

Do you mean that this functionality will be deactivated again before release? If not, what do you mean by "the Nautilus change"?

the context menu mount option has been dropped from nautilus yesterday in hardy, the mounts are not really usable yet since the softwares are not using gvfs and can't open files from the location

Can you please clarify... ?

I am using this for mounting ISO media files
http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/62507/

This is just a "Daemon Tools" functionality which mostly all
Windows users knows about.

And the reason is to avoid burning and unpacking. Directly use
a ISO file without any hazzle.

Fedora 9 also uses this, discussed in a swedish forum, just great.

Mounting ISO files via right clicking is a valid use case that can justify turning it on by default, and ability to mount other archive files would be a bonus. We have other similar cases of apps being unable to access gvfs features yet; I don't think this would be a big exception.

the desktop file is installed as an example and easy to copy, providing a feature half working to users will mainly lead to confusions and bug reports that's why we will not enable it by default, it's easy enough to copy the example if you want to use it

Which desktop file? I don't see a desktop file shipped in any of the gvfs-related packages.

could you use the support tracker for user questions? the desktop is installed to /usr/share/doc/nautilus-data/examples/mount-archive.desktop and needs to be copied to /usr/share/applications to be used in nautilus

Still a problem in Intrepid. Mounted ISO file has a drive icon that looks like it's unmounted. (Icon should really look like a CD, anyway.)
