I'm also experiencing this bug. I'd like to add the output of ls -la in my home, which seems strange to me:
d????????? ? ? ? ? ? .gvfs

Question 2: Suppose gvfs is working, wouldn't it be a good idea to make this more obvious to the users and not hide it somewhere as a hidden folder? On Mac OS X, they seem to use something with a similar results, everything gets mounted to /Volumes and is visibly accessible there.
