Bug Description

7.04 updated, gimp-print 5.0.0.99.1-0ubuntu2.

If a printer is configured as an HP Color LaserJet (or several other color HP printers), only grayscale printing is offered.

pull up a color image in gimp
select Print... from the file menu
see that the image is in color in the page preview
click Setup Printer
select any HP Color LaserJet
see that the image is now grayscale
go into Output tab
see that Color is grayed out

All of these printers are color printers, so they should be able to print in color.

The source of the problem may be in the foo2hp utility of the foo2zjs package, according to some of the several other bugs complaining about color problems with HP printing under Ubuntu, or in the PPD. It seems there is a systematic problem here that many are seeing and it should be fixed and backported, if necessary. Apparently it's been around a while. HP printers are among the most common, particularly their color lasers, so a lof of people are affected by this.

Relevant bugs: Bug #158837, Bug #90250, Bug #55341. Some very complicated workarounds are given in those bug reports, but none that is either simple or practical to implement broadly. This really needs to be fixed and released.

Just to confirm this, I was surprised to see this behavior when selecting our HP 4550 Color Laserjet. A simple workaround is to simply select the Adobe PostScript driver, but specify the color printer as the queue to use - at least that worked for me.

I'm using 64-bit Ubuntu 7.10.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Karmic Koala. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/. Thanks again and we appreciate your help.
