Transparent panel menu isn't so transparent

After updating to the latest dapper gnome-panel on Nov23 @ 20:00, the menu and
fast-user-switch-applet backgrounds are black. This makes the menu unreadable
unless you click on it. See attached screenshot

look at the menu on the left and applet toward the right. The background should
be transparent.

The panel is supposed to be transparent. The menu and one applet are not.

I'm using dapper if that isn't descriptive enough.

I'll try different themes when I go back thome Monday.

I tried Clearlooks, Human, Crux, etc and the menu still stayed the weird black
color. Try making the panel transparent and it might do the same for you. I am
using an ati card with fglrx if that helps?

Well, I can't reproduce.
I'm asking if other people see this.

I'll try switching back from the proprietary ati drivers (fglrx) back to the OSS
counterparts. If that fixes it, it is a bug with the ATI drivers. I'll do that
later today.

It happens here too with clearlooks/cairo but not industrial by example.

I just noticed that this problem isn't just when the panel is transparent. The
menus are a different color when your panel is set to the same as the theme.
I tried every theme on Ubuntu's Dapper Drake devel branch and here is what I
came up with:

Human: Affected
Clearlooks: Affected
Crux: the panel is transparent and the menu background turns silver
Glider: same as above
Grand Canyon: NOT Affected
Mist: Not Affected
Ocean Drive: Not Affected minus a small underline of the menu
Simple: Not affected
Smokey Blue: Grey background for menu, clock, and weather applet when the panel
is transparent
Traditional: Not Affected

This problem has to do with the gtk theme and the way gnome-panel displays it.
Is this a bug that should be filed upstream?

Unstable versions move fast enough to not bother backporting every single fix to
get them 2 days before a tarball. If you don't want to get such issues for a few
day better to stick to a stable version of the distro. Anyway this bug is fixed
with the new version of that week:
