i tried to use the "select window" feature to select gnome panel, but this bug report appeared instead telling that it crashed

This seems to be caused by the call of xprop which says '_NET_FRAME_WINDOW: no such atom on any window.' The attached patch should solve this.

Still affect me in lucid. In synaptc i see only 0.3.8-1ubuntu-1 version.
