the issue is a qt hack one

Sounds like gnome-appearance ends up calling QGtkStyle. The reason this would happen is if the user is using the gtk-qt-engine for theming while at the same time using QGtkStyle configured for Qt apps. For obvious reasons this configuration is not supported as it will end with endless recursion. Try uninstalling either theme engine and see if the problem occurs.
