Bug Description

Binary package hint: mozilla-firefox

Hello everybody,

the following cosmetic issue occurs with Firefox 3 b5 (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9b5) Gecko/2008041515 Firefox/3.0b5) as it ships bundled with Kubuntu 8.04: When a form checkbox or radio button has the keyboard focus, the original control image disappears and a grey square is rendered instead. This makes it impossible to distinguish a checked/selected control from an unchecked one while it has the keyboard focus.

For details, refer to the attached screenshot. Let me know if you need further input.

Thanks,
Thilo

I would like to confirm this one as well. I'm currently on Firefox beta 3.0b5 and have Kubuntu 8.04 installed. I've recently deleted my old profile and then created a new profile without any addons for my FF3.
That didn't help with this issue.

As I just found out, the issue seems to be limited to KDE 3.5.9. Under KDE 4.0.3, which I installed yesterday, the controls are rendered correctly.

aside from the radio buttons and check boxes, I'm also having this related problem: Text select areas allow you to select an item, and it looks fine (blue by default), but when the focus is moved to another object or link, the selected item loses it's colour and goes back to normal, so you can't tell if you've got anything selected..

This same problem appears in epiphany on kde. I assume it's an XUL-runner problem. Adding projects.

what gtk theme are you using? maybe you can change that and make it
work better that way?

Note sure what naught101 is using, but I selected "Use my KDE style in GTK applications" in the KDE appearance settings. Selecting an explicit GTK style works around the issue.

I have experienced the same problem after upgrade to Kubuntu hardy. Firefox 3.0 is still the same. You have to click on a radio button, then click elsewhere to see the selection. I have all standard default themes etc. Why is the bug listed as invalid?

It is listed as invalid in all packages but one because the bug is actually only in gtk-qt-engine and needs to be fixed there. As you can see it is confirmed for that package.

Does this happen only in Kubuntu and NOT in Ubuntu then?

Work around for me was to "System Settings-Appearances-GTK Styles and Fonts"

1) Use another style=Redmond
2) Install scrollbar fix.

Confirmed on latest Kubuntu 8.04.1. Why does this work in Debian but not Ubuntu? It's very annoying in GMail and the workaround is unattractive.

No problem with Firefox 2.x, the bug presented itself after upgrading to firefox 3.

Selecting a theme other than QT for GTK apps is a workaround, but degrades the visual experience.

Unfortunately, I cannot confirm that gtk-qt-engine_1.1+svn20080816-0ubuntu4~hardy1~ppa1 (which I just got via system update in Hardy) solves the issue. What still seems to cause various rendering problems is scrolling on a page. All content that becomes visible as result of the scrolling action is rendered incorrectly (see attached screenshot).

After upgrading the KControl module for GTK theme selection disappeared and I can't seem to set gtk-qt theme, even if I manually select it in my .gtkrc-2.0 (in attachment).

Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks

Due to another bug with FF and flash movies, I launched FireFox from a command line and keep getting these errors:

(firefox:9529): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

Unsure if this has anything to do with it.

I still have the grey check box problem. This is on a Kubuntu 8.04.1 and Firefox 3.02 (just updated). Its seems this bug is Ubuntu related only. Why does the status say fix released?

I think this is more related to the KDE Desktop rendering engine more than FF itself. I've seen other KDE windows show up showing similar results of `boxed out radio boxes`. Once I remember where this screen is, I'll post a screen shot.

Still the same problems here:

* Focussed checkboxes and radio buttons don't show correctly
* List selection doesn't show

shepherdguy's workaround (2008-08-08) does work but reduces the visual experience a lot.

I am using Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; de; rv:1.9.0.3) Gecko/2008092510 Ubuntu/8.04 (hardy) Firefox/3.0.3 (Kubuntu / KDE 3.5.9)

Confirmed on a fully updated Kubuntu Hardy (recently upgraded from Gutsy) with Firefox 3 running the Plastik KDE theme.

Installing the gtk2-engines package provided a number of Gtk+ themes. Then, going into "System Settings", under "Look & Feel" choosing "Appearance", then entering the "GTK Styles and Fonts" panel and choosing Clearlooks in the "GTK Styles" section did provide properly functioning form controls once I restarted Firefox.

I decided to install gtk2-engines-qtcurve and choose QtCurve both as my KDE style and as the GTK+ style described above. However, the GTK+ style must be chosen explicitly: the "Use my KDE style in GTK applications" does not manage to properly enable the QtCurve styling for Firefox. This is itself probably some kind of bug or omission.

These kinds of bugs are awkward because although one shouldn't override the user's theme choices when upgrading their system, one should avoid leaving them with inadequate themes or configurations.
