Mine occured the same as post #4.

Using Chrome, downloaded PDF to ~/Desktop, Nautilus crashed. 13.04, had Gnome3 PPA set up since before distro upgrade from 12.10.

Also x64 arch, not installed with Alpha medium like the bug report shows, distro upgraded approx 13/5/25 from 12.10 which was installed from USB (regular x64 release).

Also, as for nonfree kernel modules, wasn't using fglrx, but was using nvidia k-mod (310 driver).

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please answer these questions:

* Is this reproducible?
* If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?

This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be easily reproducible, it happens seemingly randomly.

In my case it happens when I download files (where my default download location is my desktop). It also recently happened (it happens about once a day or once every 2 days for me) when I printed a document (to PDF) which saved it on my desktop. Though if I was to save a random file to my Desktop it most likely wouldn't happen, it seems to be a "once a day" type of occurrence.

The only other aid I can give is that I've only seen it happen with Chrome saving files.

Hrm, now that I mention it there is one other thing. It seems to frequently (possibly only) happen with files that have previews such as pictures, PDF's, and possibly video clips. I have yet to see it happen (that I recall) with one without a preview, such a .torrent file or something of that nature. Not sure if anybody else can confirm this is or isn't the case.

Is there any way for me to get additional debug information?

It happens to me shortly after boot every nearly every time. The
primary thing going on the system is checking for updates. It usually
occurs before I start Thunderbird which is my first user action after
sign on. I am using gnome fallback if it makes any difference.

Probably that is just a delayed crash report. I expect the crash actually happened in your previous session before reboot

I have not noticed any time aspects of it. You know when the crash happened - since Nautilus is gone, in Gnome env, you lose your Desktop icons.

I do not use Thunderbird, though. I am using Gnome 3.X (latest from repos).

As a wild guess, this could be a race condition where the thumbnailing engine tries to access the file while it's being written to. At least that would match the behavior I've seen and some of the other reports above. It would also explain the seemingly random behavior.

I've only had it happen once so far , so I can't tell for sure, but I think a possible approach to reproduce it would be to download a thumbnailed file from a slow source (ideally from Chromium, or receive a file in Skype) while either having a nautilus view of your download folder open, or opening it while the download is in progress.
(In my case I got a crash while opening a nautilus window while attempting to accept a Skype file transfer that got stuck.)

Greg Fotiades (boostedsohc) wrote :

I was unable to reproduce using the above methods. Though I'd agree that it's a race condition (most likely involving the thumbnail renderer based on the files it seems to happen with) given the sporadic nature of it.

I think it happened to me right after installing some applicaitons. It had happened before after I updated the system, and I could not resolve the issue, so I tried so many things and it got worse, then I reinstalled Ubuntu, then I was installing my regular apps that it happened again.

I believe the application that caused this has something to do with
gir1.2-gconf-2.0
gir1.2-unique-3.0
libunique-3.0-0
and python-compizconfig

It might have been ubuntu-tweak.

Last thing I remember before reinstalling ubuntu was xserver-xorg was having problems.

I suspect this crash only happens with the Ubuntu Icon themes and not the standard GNOME theme, can anyone confirm this?

K1 (k1monfared) wrote :

Some thoughts (that totally might be unrelated): I It's apparently got something to do with gnome 3.8. One other problem that I had was software center was crashing each time I opened it, and it started happening after I installed ubuntu-tweak which depends on gir1.2. In another bug report people said they have downgraded to gnome3.6 and it works fine now. I did the same and the problem is gone.

While I don't know what Ubuntu Tweak would have to do with this issue, I also have it installed. I only made modifications to scrollbar colors, though, I think.
