here it does not work neither in "gedit", nor in any other application. When the described keys are hit, the only thing it does is to jump after the word without marking (selecting) it.

The bug is connected with my hardware and/or keyboard (laptop HP NX9420 rh450ea - http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3176 ).

Actually GNOME does not recognize hitting simultaneously "ctrl+shift" keys. I've tried assigning a key combination in "Keyboard Shortcuts" and when I hit "ctrl+shift+escape", the program shows that I press "ctrl+escape" only. The shift key works when it is hit and the "shift + escape" combination is recognized, too.

I had similar problem in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and it turned out also that the problem is hardware, see also

Nope.

Actually the problem is GNOME related. If you adjust the keyboard layout to be change with "Ctrl+Shift" (and not as is by default with "Alt+Shift"), these keys are blocked by GNOME and the keyboard layout changer.
