Bug Description

Binary package hint: metacity

Steps to Reproduce
--------------------------------
 * Fresh install Ubuntu Gutsy (7.10)
 * Open gEdit (or any program with 'Save As...' functionality in Gnome) and type 'ctrl + s' on the keyboard
 * Start typing the name of the file you'd like to save it as

Does it start using Metacity's 'quick search' field instead of the normal 'Name' field?

This happens to me in OpenOffice.org, Mozilla Firefox and gEdit.

This is a usability problem because it requires the use of a mouse to re-focus the 'Name' field or the use of the tab button being hit multiple times.

I guarantee you that this is a fresh install of Gutsy (7.10) as I erased every single setting folder in my /home directory before installing.

Here's screenshot of my trying to type the filename in gEdit, but instead, end up typing in the 'quick search' box by default.

Thank you for your bug report!

The keystroke ctrl-S causes searching in a treeview widget when that widget is focussed. You can change this in the keyboard preferences window for the whole of GNOME.

This has nothing to do with Metacity, incidentally.

Thanks.

I'm not sure I understand where these settings are though... sorry.

Also, if this is supposed to be the default setting, I'm proposing to bring focus BACK to the 'Name' text field as I don't know why you'd want to search for a file when saving a file.

Thomas, that's not the problem.

<alex-weej> i think they're claiming that if you have the "Browse for other folders" expander open when the file selector comes up, the default keyboard focus is in the folder view, not the name entry
i just tested this, it's true
<alex-weej> keyboard focus moves from the name entry to the folder view

You can visually see this happening. If you close the expander, the next time you invoke this dialogue the keyboard focus will stay in the name entry, as expected.
